Ok, what do yummy smores and marshmallows have to do with self control?
Imagine you are a 6 year old child face with the ultimately dilemma, of waiting a 15 minutes and not eating a delicious marshmallow to only be rewarding with something better, or indulge like never before!
The Marshmellow Test
The first marshmallow test was conducted by Walter Mischel and Ebbe B. Ebbesen at Stanford University in 1960. The purpose of the study was to understand how delayed gratification and the ability to wait to attain something that one wants, in children. The original study took place at a nursery school with children ages 4-6. The children were tempted with a treat of their choice and instructed that if they could wait 15 minutes without eating the treat they would be rewarded with a second treat.
With all of the children who were involved in the experiment, the majority of the children ate the treat immediately after the researcher left the room.
Researchers followed up with the children of the experiment years later and discovered those children that delayed their gratification by waiting for the second treat were significantly more competent and higher SAT scores.
What does it all mean Basil?
We live in a world of instant gratification
There is not one thing that I can think of that you cannot get without a touch of a button.
Well I was thinking maybe time travel or something like that, but then virtual reality came to mind so there’s that.
As a society we are all about I want it and I want it yesterday!
This is true for nearly everything
Hold the Vision
Trust the Process
This applies to the way many of us view fitness and health
True to everything there is a process. Now there are things that can help expedite the process, but none the less we cannot rush the process. When we rush the process or skip steps we often miss out on necessary information or components that are required down the road.
Let us highlight a few examples:
- Six pack abs in 4 weeks
- Lose 10 pounds in 10 days
- Add 50 pounds to your squat immediately
*disclaimer all of these are completely possible but for the majority of us not realistic. Although many of us have these for possible goals and ambitions, there is a process and program to get there.
What do we do instead?
We fall for the quick diet schemes, the most “advanced” technological products, and complete sacrifice for form because some “guru” on the internet said that is the best way to train.
What to do next?
Have some fun!
Health and fitness is not about the grind of “working out”. it is about exploring what the body is capable of living a long and active life.
The rewards for enduring is prolong life span, more time with your friends and family, conquering mountains, running races, playing, eating delicious food, and feeling great!
